My Name Is Earl (recorded off TV)

Elders with Andrew Denton (TV): I love this show – it depicts the intelligence and wisdom of the older generation, as opposed to the dribble we get from those idiots who take the spotlight regularly on our TV screens and Internet.

Good News Week (TV)

Watched:

Berlin – Schonhauser Corner (Arc cinema): Classic German film about youth issues and attitudes in the 50s. As a depiction of Germany youth, post-war and pre-Wall, it was interesting. As an engaging drama, it was a little lacking, although some scenes (like the discovery of the unexploded bomb) were good. 3 stars.

Rockwiz, John Safran’s Race Relations
(recorded off TV): it’s interesting that I could watch every gory second of Dead Snow the other night, but the sight of Safran snogging the mothers of three of his ex-girlfriends caused me to cringe and cover my eyes!

The Magic Of Audrey, I Knew It Was You: Rediscovering John Cazale (TV)

Listening to: Embrace (Pnau featuring Ladyhawke)

Watched:

Cuban Rebel Girls (Arc cinema): Errol Flynn’s last movie, about, well, girls involved in the Cuban rebellion. As a friend said, it’s bad when Flynn is the best actor in a movie! However, for film buffs, this has enough morbid curiosity about it to make it worth seeing (in a sort of “so bad it’s good” kinda way). 3 stars.

In The Wake Of The Bounty (Arc cinema): Errol Flynn’s first role, as Fletcher Christian in the dramatised version of Charles Chauvel’s travel show about Pitcairn Island. The documentary stuff was good, the dramatic bits…… did I mention the documentary bits were good? 3 stars (for the documentary bits).

Curb Your Enthusiasm Season 6 Episodes 2, 3 (DVD)

Watched:

The Box (cinema): Richard Donnie Darko Kelly’s ;attest, revolving around a hard-up couple getting a button that, when pushed, gives them a million dollars but makes someone in the world die. The first half hour must have been the Twilight Zone episode that this was based on, because it wrapped it up nicely with a clever twist that I didn’t see coming. Expanding it to another hour fifteen… well, I can see how many are disappointed with the result, but I still enjoyed what it had to offer (even if some parts didn’t really require inclusion, such as the water stuff – I still liked them though). Nowhere near Donnie Darko but better than Southland Tales. 4 stars

Dead Snow (Dod Sno) (Canberra International Film Festival): The Nazi Zombie film – not much else to say, plot-wise. After a Friend in moviebuffs gave it a score of 1 out of 4, I had low expectations of the film. Turns out to be a hoot, although it may help that I saw it with an appreciative audience at a midnight screening. A great way to close this year’s CIFF. 4 stars.

"I began to view the world at large through borrowed eyes, eyes more like those I wanted to own."

"In my view having babies was supposed to be something beautiful, not a duty. Something incredible, not role-playing. Bringing new life into this dying world, promising hope for a sane tomorrow. As I saw it, any expectation of sanity rested in a woman's womb."

"It wasn't like my life had changed at all, and maybe that was part of the problem. Because something inside me was different. Shifting, like a tide or sand dune. That something was growing, stretching, taking shape beneath my skin. And I wondered if very soon it might blow me apart at the seams."

Can anyone recommend any good, brief Spanish language schools in Spain? A friend and I have a long break between semesters here in Sweden and are looking for a few weeks' entertainment. Does anyone know what the average/low price for one of these schools is? And does anyone know of the possibility of renting an apartment in Spain for just one month? The accommodation that I saw that was offered by the schools was quite expensive, even for Sweden. I know the rent in Spain is much less expensive than here, even in a fully furnished, all bills paid room.

Gracias!!

A long time ago I posted here CGI images of what I called Pie Hole Too, CGI images of an imaginary branch of the Pie Hole. This time I decided to make CGI images of the real thing and tried to recreate the Pie Hole in my computer using my own CGI tools. The results, well you can judge that now.

Liberty day view
This a general view of the Liberty building, day shot. One thing that always bothered me is that they never shower the Liberty and the roof in the same picture. Now you can see the complete building, including the roof.

drunk on the dark streets of some city,
it's night, you're lost, where's your
room?
you enter a bar to find yourself,
order scotch and water.
damned bar's sloppy wet, it soaks
part of one of your shirt
sleeves.
It's a clip joint-the scotch is weak.
you order a bottle of beer.
Madame Death walks up to you
wearing a dress.
she sits down, you buy her a
beer, she stinks of swamps, presses
a leg against you.
the bar tender sneers.
you've got him worried, he doesn't
know if you're a cop, a killer, a
madman or an
Idiot.
you ask for a vodka.
you pour the vodka into the top of
the beer bottle.
It's one a.m. In a dead cow world.
you ask her how much for head,
drink everything down, it tastes
like machine oil.

you leave Madame Death there,
you leave the sneering bartender
there.

you have remembered where
your room is.
the room with the full bottle of
wine on the dresser.
the room with the dance of the
roaches.
